Chapter Eighteen
Frome, Thursday 8 December
âDarling, can you pass the butter?â
Natasha looked up to find Rob with an arm outstretched over the breakfast table and a slightly pained look. The prospect of cold toast always stressed him out. That and tepid tea.
She passed the butter, noticing his bare hand. No ring.
âRob, did I see you wearing a signet ring last night?â she asked him as she poured herself some orange juice. Mabel was sucking on a tube of fromage frais, Bella parked beneath her chair in the well-judged expectation of falling food.
He looked at her. âMe?â
âYes.â
He thought for a moment. âI donât know. Maybe.â He shrugged. âWhy?â
Maybe? It seemed an odd response. Either he had one or he didnât. âIâve never seen you wear one before.â
âHavenât you?â he frowned. âHuh.â
She waited for a further explanation but nothing appeared to be forthcoming. â. . . Well,â she asked impatiently. âWhen did you get it?â
He shrugged. âIâve always had it. An eighteenth birthday gift from my parents.â
âWhat?â She stared at him. How could she not have known that? âBut then, why donât you always wear it? Arenât they supposed to be left on?â
He sighed, sounding irritated. âOh, I donât know, Nats. Sometimes itâs a bother and I take it off, other times I donât think about it. I donât see why youâre making a fuss about it.â
âI wouldnât say Iâm making a fuss!â she protested weakly. Perhaps it upset him? If it had been a gift from his parents, perhaps it reminded him of them too much. The wound was still very much open, especially as it had been compounded by the bitter fallout with his siblings. âI just think itâs odd that Iâve never noticed it before when youâre saying youâve had it since you were eighteen, thatâs all.â
âSo then itâs my fault you donât have an eye for the details?â he asked. His tone was arch and he immediately looked up, taking in her shocked expression. Both of them glanced at Mabel, who was oblivious. âIâm sorry,â he said quickly. âI shouldnât take it out on you. Iâm so . . .â he sighed wearily. âYouâre right. Why should you notice when youâve always got so much going on, what with chasing after Mabel and whatnot. Itâs just a ring. I wear it, I donât.â He shrugged. âPlease letâs not fight. My bandwidth is already taken up with todayâs calendar and I donât know how Iâm going to get through it. Iâm on site in Bristol this morning, then in back-to-back meetings all afternoon till seven.â
Natasha stared at her plate. Meetings till seven meant getting home after eight thirty. It would be another lap tray supper for her tonight.
â. . . Darling, what is it?â
She looked up to find Rob watching her, the piece of toast held in his hand as he chewed. âWhat?â she echoed.
âWhatâs wrong? You look . . . distant.â
She swallowed and picked up her spoon, trying to find the appetite for her porridge. âNo, Iâm here.â
